Marriage is one of God’s most beautiful institutions, but it’s true… all marriages go through seasons of difficulty at one time or another. God’s Word can be hidden in your heart and used in prayer for your husband or wife. Here are 21 scripture prayers for marriage; use them as prayer points for marriage to draw closer to your spouse and to God.
These bible verses and corresponding prayers can be used to pray for your husband, pray for your wife, or used to pray together in unity. Whether you’re having marriage problems, seeking marriage restoration, or simply want to grow stronger together in the Lord, these scripture prayers for marriage will help.
As I write this, my husband and I are celebrating 21 years of marriage. We couldn’t have gotten this far if it weren’t for the grace of God, commitment to the Word and one another, and strong Christian mentors in our life. We’ve certainly had our share of struggles over these 21 years! But God has always been faithful and provided wisdom to us when we humbled ourselves and prayed for His direction.

21 Scripture Prayers For Marriage
1. Ephesians 4:32
Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
Lord, show us how to be kind and compassionate towards each other. Let us forgive one another just as you have forgiven us.
2. Psalm 147:3
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
Lord, when we go through trials in our marriage and our hearts feel broken, help us to heal and bring glory to you.
3. Deuteronomy 31:8
The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.
Lord, regardless of what we will walk through, remind us that you will be with us and won’t forsake us. Keep us from becoming fearful or discouraged.
4. James 1:19-20
My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.
Help us to be quick to listen to one another, and slow to say harsh words or jump to assumptions. Let us think clearly about the situation before we allow ourselves to become angry with one another. Let the Holy Spirit convict us when our actions don’t glorify you, Lord.
5. Ephesians 4:31
Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.
Heavenly Father, remove any bitterness from our hearts. Heal us of any feelings of anger or rage that may cloud our thinking. Let us not become blinded by anger with one another, regardless of any frustration or disappointment we may feel at times.
6. Proverbs 14:1
The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down.
As a wife, help me to be wise. Show me how to build up our home instead of tear it down. Help me speak life and encouragement with my words and my actions.
7. Romans 12:9
Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.
Let us be sincere and authentic with one another. Let us value good things and be repelled by evil. Give us discernment to know the difference.
8. Hebrews 12:14
Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.
Teach us how to have peace in our home, between our children and between ourselves. Let us seek after holiness and find ways to please you with our daily life. Draw us close to you so we may see you at work in our lives.
9. Philippians 4:13
I can do all this through him who gives me strength.
Lord, there might be pressure on us at times, but we can do all things through you because you will give us divine strength for the tasks at hand.
10. James 1:22
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
While we desire to hear from you, help us to not stop there; help us to listen and then follow through by doing what you’ve said. Help us to obey your word and remember we are in spiritual warfare for our marriage, and keep us from being deceived by the enemy who seeks to destroy what we’ve built together.
11. Philippians 2:3
Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.
Lord, keep me from feeling like I’m in competition with my husband [wife]. We aren’t working against one another, rather we’re working together to a common cause. One of us isn’t better than the other… we’re better together, with you in our midst. We’re a team.
12. Proverbs 12:4
An excellent wife is the crown of her husband, but she who brings shame is like rottenness in his bones.
I want to be a crown to my husband, Lord. Keep me from bringing shame or reproach on him. Help me to speak well of him to others. Help me to protect his reputation and build him up, rather than making him look or feel like a fool.
13. Colossians 3:13
Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.
When either of us messes up and makes mistakes, help us to forgive one another, just as you’ve forgiven us even though we’re unworthy. You always offer grace to use and are merciful to us. Let us offer the same grace and mercy to one another.
14. Proverbs 3:5
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
Teach us to trust you and the work you are doing in our lives and marriage. Even when we don’t understand your plan or what you’re doing, let us rest in your promises. You love us and want what’s best for us.
15. Isaiah 41:10
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Cast out all fear from our minds. Give us boldness. You walk with us! What an honor that is! Keep us from being discouraged. Strengthen our marriage and our family. Help us and uphold us. Draw us close together and closer to you.
16. Proverbs 15:1
A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
Let us speak kindly to each other and keep from raising our voices to one another. Help us use words that are respectful rather than angry and condemning.
17. Ephesians 4:26
Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger.
If we do have days where we are angry with one another, I pray that it’s resolved quickly. Keep us from going to bed angry.
18. Proverbs 21:19
It is better to live in a desert land than with a quarrelsome and fretful woman.
Lord, keep my attitude in check. If I begin to be nagging or argumentative, tug at my heart. Reign me in and back to you. Help me control my emotions. Give me the words to speak, or let me know when to be silent.
19. Ephesians 4:29
Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
Teach me to have conversations that are edifying and gracious. Show me how to speak life into my marriage, my children, and the people who are close to me. Let my words build up their spirits and encourage them, rather than tear them down.
20. Ecclesiastes 4:12
Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
Thank you, Lord, for making us into a “cord of three.” Between the two of us, and with you at the center, we are stronger. Our marriage is on a solid foundation because of you. Help us to always keep you first.
21. 1 Peter 4:8
Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.
Lord, show us how to love like you do. Let us love one another deeply, and in doing so it will be easier to cover sins and offer forgiveness. Show us how to love so that we’re also an example to our children of what marriage can and should be like, so they can have godly marriages of their own one day.
