3 Bible Verses About Marriage That Will Change Your Life

Have you been married very long? We’ve been married a little over 18 years now, and as the years have went by there are three bible verses about marriage (well, bible passages) that continue to shape us today.

3 bible verses about marriage that will change your life

My husband often says he wouldn’t know how to have a successful marriage if it weren’t for the Word of God. He didn’t see it modeled in his family growing up… far from it, actually. He spent his first few years being raised by a single aunt, then briefly by his biological mother, and then in foster care during his teen years.

The Bible was his roadmap for marriage, and God has been faithful to him — and to us. It’s nothing short of a miracle what God will do in our life when we put Him and His principles FIRST. Remember, Isaiah 55:11 says His Word will not return void! He keeps His promises!

    3 Bible Verses About Marriage

Use these passages to meditate and pray that God would help you cultivate a marriage that honors Him and His Word.

    Matthew 22:37-39 KJV

“Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.”

More than likely, you’re familiar with this passage, but not in the context of marriage. However, it’s important to apply this to our marriage, because if I’m supposed to love my NEIGHBOR as myself, how much more am I to love my SPOUSE as myself?

It’s an important reminder to first focus on loving the Lord with all of our heart, soul, and mind; every part of me, I offer to Him! But then I’m also to love my husband as I love myself, if not more so!

    Ephesians 5:22-28 KJV

“Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord, For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies.”

This is a powerful passage for married couples! It shows the responsibility and reciprocity of each of us, with submission and respect offered from the wife to the husband, and deep love and care offered from the husband to the wife.

The charge for husbands in the Ephesian church to “love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it” has incredible meaning; as Christ loved us, and was willing to die for us, so is the husband to love his wife. As a wife, it’s not hard to practice submission and respect when your husband exhibits such love toward you as Christ does to His church!

    Ephesians 4:31-32 KJV

“Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”

Sandwiched between the Apostle Paul’s statement that there is “one Lord, one faith, one baptism” (4:5) and the charge to husbands and wives in chapter 5, we find this passage about putting away bitterness, anger, and evil speaking. Rather than acting out in such ways, we are to be kind to our spouse, tenderhearted toward them, and FORGIVE. Why? Because God has forgiven US! He has extended forgiveness to us for so much, how could we not extend forgiveness to our spouse?

This doesn’t mean it will always be easy; actually, many times it may be hard. We’re human, after all, and not God. However, He promises to give us the strength to do hard things when we reach out to Him.
