During the month of November, many Christians spend time reflecting on what they’re grateful for, and growing in gratitude for all God has done.
While this can certainly be done any time of year, it seems especially fitting this month to practice cultivating a thankful heart. Here are 11 thanksgiving prayer points to get you started. Read the bible verses about thanksgiving that go along with each one, then spend time praying in your own words. These are meant to prompt you into deeper and more focused prayer.
You can use these thanksgiving prayer points during your own personal prayer time, at church, in a small group, or even as part of the thanksgiving dinner prayer. One idea is to share these thanksgiving prayer points with those you are gathering with (whether in person or virtually) and take turns reading/praying each one. Use the song at the end of this post to close with focused worship and offer prayers of praise and thanksgiving to God for who He is and all He has done.

Prayer Point #1: Thank You, God
“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.” 1 Chronicles 16:34
Lord, I give you thanks. You are so good to me! Your love for me is so great and infinite. For that alone, I am grateful. You are always working things for my good, even when I can’t see it or don’t understand what’s going on around me. Help me to rest in the fact that you are God and I am not. You are my Creator and know me better than I know myself. I am yours, Lord, utterly and completely. Thank you for your love, your mercy, and your grace. Thank you for your provision. Thank you for family, friends, and the people I get to do life with.
Prayer Point #2: Give Peace to the Church Body
“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.” Colossians 3:15
Let your peace, a divine peace that only you give, be evident in my heart. While we seek peace with one another and desire to live in unity, help us to do the work that needs to be done and then bless those efforts. Bring us together. Let us see your hand at work in it all and be thankful for it.
Prayer Point #3: Help us be Generous, Lord
“You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.” 2 Corinthians 9:11
I pray for your blessing over my life. Enrich me. Help me to be fruitful so I may be generous with others in any way that I can. Help me understand that my generosity is an act of thankfulness to you, Lord. You’ve given me so much, and this is one way I can give to others. Use me… let me be your hands and feet here on earth. Help me to see the needs around me; use me to meet them in a way so that you may be glorified. Nothing we have is truly ours, anyway. We are only stewards of it here on earth, managing it for you and your eternal purposes.
Prayer Point #4: Thank You For Health
“Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.” 3 John 1:2
Just as I am growing in my spiritual health with you, help me to also grow in my physical health. Give me wisdom to make right choices regarding my body and do my best to avoid viruses, diseases, and other illnesses. Teach me to make better food choices and honor you with what I allow into my body. And Lord, if I do encounter illness, give me the faith to know you will bring me through it. Heal me, and then give me boldness to share my testimony with others so that you may get the glory for it.
Prayer Point #5: Release us from Anxiety
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7
I give all my anxious thoughts to you, Lord. Your word says to cast all our cares on you, for you care for us (1 Peter 5:7). In the situations that give us anxiety, help us to pray and release them to you. Let us instead turn them into prayers of thanksgiving, knowing you will give us a peace that only you can give. Give us mental rest that transcends our understanding. Let it soothe our weary hearts and minds. Instead of worrying about our nation’s unrest, I will be thankful that you have everything under control. Instead of being anxious about a virus, I will ask for your protection and the wisdom to stay safe and healthy, knowing that nothing can happen to me that didn’t come through you first. You hold my future in your hands, and you are good.
Prayer Point #6: Help us to Trust You
“The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him.” Psalm 28:7
You alone are my strength. You are my shield, protecting me from everything that the world tries to throw at me. I trust in you, and you help me. Help my heart to trust in you; sometimes my mind knows to trust, but my heart can struggle. Help my unbelief. Teach to fiercely and passionately trust in you. Let there be a song of praise and thanksgiving in my heart, always.
Prayer Point #7: Father, You are Faithful
“I will sing of the Lord’s great love forever; with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known through all generations. I will declare that your love stands firm forever, that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself.” Psalm 89:1-2
Father, you love me and are always faithful to me. Your plans for me are better than any plans I may make for myself. Let the words of my mouth testify of your faithfulness. May the ears of my children hear of your goodness and prompt them to seek after you. Your love for us is eternal. You will never leave us or forsake us. Though things in this life don’t always go the way I want, I can trust you and know that you will be faithful to lead me where I need to be. Help me to follow your path for my life, rather than my own.
Prayer Point #8: Consume My Thought Life, Lord
“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” Philippians 4:8
In a world that seems to spiral out of control, help me find stability in you. You are my rock. I take all negative thoughts captive and bind them in the name of Jesus. My mind will stay focused on you, Lord. I will notice the positive, the good, the beauty that’s around me. I will look for the people who are doing good. I will speak encouragement to the helpers in our community. I will think about the excellent things you are doing in the midst of this world. I will combat any negative thought that creeps into my mind with your Word, your truth. I will encourage myself in you and I will speak life into others as well.
Prayer Point #9: Bless Me and Keep Me
“The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you; The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.” Numbers 6:24-26
Bless me and keep me, Lord. Shelter me from anything that would try to separate me from my relationship with you. Teach me how to walk in favor with you. Be gracious to me and patient with me. Give me peace in my mind, and in my family, and as I go about my day. May your love radiate from me so that others would want to know what’s different about me. I want to be a reflection of you and your holy spirit.
Prayer Point #10: Thank You for Fellowship With Other Believers
“And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.” Acts 2:42
Lord, I offer thanksgiving for the opportunity to fellowship with other believers. Let us encourage one another to remain steadfast and continue in the faith. Thank you for this time of gathering together as a nation and as we offer gratitude back to you for all that you’ve brought us through. This year may look a little different than past Thankgiving holidays, but we are creative and resilient and will always find ways to gather and give thanks. Be it in person or virtually, or however we are able to come together, we know that you are in our midst. We are thankful we have each other and that we can offer thanksgiving to you from wherever we may be, regardless of what’s going on in the world around us.
Prayer Point #11: I Praise Your Name
“I will praise the name of God with a song, And will magnify Him with thanksgiving.” Psalm 69:30
Finally, Lord, I want to close these thanksgiving prayer points by praising you in song. You are holy and awesome and I magnify your name right now. I thank you for who you are. As I praise you in song, I just want to focus on you and your goodness. I’m grateful for all you’ve done in my life. I’m thankful for where you are taking me. I’m excited to see what you will do in the future. I trust you completely! You are my rock and my fortress. You supply all my needs. You are awesome in this place right now. I praise your holy name. Thank you, Jesus, for all you’ve done. Amen.
