A Simple Prayer to God For Help in Hard Times

We all go through hard seasons, and the best way to get through them is with the Lord’s help. Sometimes it’s hard to find the words to pray when you’re in that season, so today we are sharing a simple prayer to God for help for when you’re struggling, need God to give you strength, and to help you be strong in Him.

While most of the posts you find on our site are about budgeting and living well on less, we’d be remiss if we didn’t pause once in awhile and remind you that it was our faith in God that’s carried us through every challenging season we’ve faced and all the problems we’ve had to overcome.

We couldn’t have made it without him!

It may sound cliche, but he really has been so good to us, even during hard times… especially during hard times. It’s during those times we’ve realized that we needed him desperately.

Last year, we shared a simple post titled A Prayer For Finances: How to Pray When Money’s Tight. It specifically addresses money struggles, but today we’re going to focus on a general prayer to God for help when you’re in a challenging season of life.

First, let’s look at what the Bible says about asking God for help.

Bible Verses About Help From God

One thing to keep in mind is that, regardless of how we feel, God will never leave us or forsake us. We find this several times throughout the Bible. Here are just a few places:

“It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.” (Deuteronomy 31:8)

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)

“Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5)

“For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, ‘Fear not, I am the one who helps you.’” (Isaiah 41:13)

Another portion of scripture that serves as a powerful reminder of God’s strength and sovereignty over our situations and struggles is Psalm 46:1, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

It’s Okay To Say A Prayer For Help With Problems In Your Life

Actually, not only is it okay to say a prayer for help with problems and needs in your life, but it’s necessary. We’re commanded to pray, as we find in the Lord’s prayer: “Give us this day our daily bread.”

Sometimes, as scary as these seasons may be, we need to be reminded that He is our help, and we can’t live life on our own terms and based on our own strength. We need Him leading us!

He desires to hear from us and wants us to pray. Remember, prayer is simply talking with him. It’s a crucial part of any relationship — communication!

Communication happens by prayer and bible reading. Don’t neglect your time in the Word during these hard times. Keep Bible verses handy by writing them down and placing them in places where you can easily see them throughout your day, such as on your car’s dashboard, your refrigerator, or your bathroom mirror. The Prophet Daniel encouraged himself in the Lord daily; it’s something we can work on doing more of, too.

Then, when you are able to pause and pray, keep these verses in mind. Use them to start your prayer time. If you’re struggling with the words to pray, be patient. This is a conversation with God, not a monologue to some unknown audience. He loves you, cares for you, and wants to hear from you!

A Simple Prayer To God For Help

God, your word says that you are my refuge and my strength, that you are my help in times of trouble. You see the need that I have in my life today. I need your help. I can’t do this in my own strength.

Guide my steps. Give me wisdom. Help me to make the right choices… choices that will ultimately honor you and bring you glory.

Stay near to me and help me feel your presence as I travel this road. Send reminders that you’re with me, won’t leave me, and haven’t forsaken me.

Even if all hell seems to break loose, help me to be strong and courageous and stand on your word and promises.

Give me a divine boldness to walk through the fire, knowing you are with me, just like you were with the three Hebrew boys in the fiery furnace.

Let me remember the words of the psalmist in Psalm 121, “I will look to the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth!”

I know you are good, mighty to save, and your love for me is greater than I can fathom.

Help me to navigate this season in my life and keep my eyes fixed on you. Let me understand that, in due time, I will look back and know that you carried me through. In Jesus name, amen.

I need God’s help every day. Don’t be ashamed that you need his help. We’ve learned our best lessons in life when we’ve walked through hard times and had to let him carry us through.

Finally, find a way to “dignify the trial.” What this means is to find the good in it, however small, and give God glory for that small thing. Give it dignity. Your trial is not a punishment or curse — it’s a time to grow and learn. Draw closer to God. Ask him to show you any lessons you can learn. What does He want to accomplish in you during this time?

Tell me: Have you ever walked through a challenging season and made it through? How did it stretch you? What did you learn?

    Much love,
