Whether you or a loved one is traveling in the summer or any other time of year, praying for a safe journey is a great idea. A prayer for safe travels is the perfect way to ask the Lord for protection while away on vacation, traveling for work, or simply for a daily commute.
It’s always best if prayer comes straight from your heart, in your own words, but sometimes it’s hard and we can all struggle to know what to say. These prayers for safe travels will help you get started.

Prayer for Safe Travels
Safe Journey Prayer for a Friend
Lord, watch over my friend as they travel. Protect them as they come and go. Give them a restful time away and bring them home safely. Send angels around them as a barrier against other vehicles around them. Keep the roads clear, traffic light, and weather pleasant. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
Prayer for Safe Travels for a Loved One
Dear God, please grant my loved one a safe trip. Your mercy has always been with us as we’ve traveled, and now I ask the same for my loved one. Guide them safely to their destination. Help them fulfill their purpose of this trip and bring them home without harm. Thank you for your tender care and hand of protection. You are so good to us. In Jesus name, amen.
Traveling Mercies Prayer
Precious Lord, give me traveling mercies as I journey. Keep me safe, watch over my family, and bring us back together again without harm. Be with me as I come in and as I go out. Be merciful to me while I’m away. I thank you for it. In Jesus name, amen.
Prayer for Safe Travels for my Husband
Lord, thank you for keeping my husband safe while he’s away. Give him favor with the people he’s traveling to see. Keep his thought life pure and deliver him from temptations that may arise while on the road. Help his body and mind to stay healthy so he can accomplish what he’s set out to do while he’s there. Bring him back safely to us and keep him out of harm’s way. Let his time on the road be peaceful, but keep him alert. Protect the other drivers around him, too. I pray this in Jesus name, amen.
Prayer for Safe Driving
God, as we prepare for this road trip, we pray for safe driving for ourselves and also those around us. Grant us steady hands on the wheel and watchful eyes on the road. I pray for your protection in front of us, behind us, and alongside us. Take the wheel, Lord, and bring us home safely again. In Jesus name, amen.
Safe Journey Prayer
Lord, be our guide and our protector on this journey. Watch over us and protect us from any accidents. Keep us free from harm and also from doing any harm. Give us grace and endurance when we’re tired. Help us be patient and kind if any trouble comes. Guide us safely until we reach our destination, and then again as we return. In Jesus name we pray, amen.
Prayer for Safe Flight
Father, I pray over the trip I’m taking on this plane. I’m trusting you that no mechanical issues or emergencies will happen during this flight. May our pilot be alert and make wise decisions. I pray for each flight attendant here today, that they will be kind, patient, and prepared. Help my fellow passengers be in good spirits and have good health. Deliver us to our destination safely. In Jesus name, amen.
Psalm 139 Prayer
“If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.”
Catholic Prayer
Almighty and merciful God, who has commissioned your angels to guide and protect us, may they be our companions from our setting out until our return. Clothe us with their invisible protection; keep from us all danger of collision, of fire, of explosion, of falling; and finally, having preserved us from all evil, and especially from sin, guide us to our heavenly home. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Orthodox Christian Prayer
Be mindful, O Lord, of those who travel by land, by sea, and by air; of the old and young, the sick, the suffering, the sorrowing, the afflicted, the captives, the needy and the poor; and upon them all send forth Thy mercies, for Thou art the Giver of all good things. Amen.
Jewish Traveler’s Prayer / Wayfarer’s Prayer
May it be Your will, Lord, our God and the God of our ancestors, that You lead us toward peace, guide our footsteps toward peace, and make us reach our desired destination for life, gladness, and peace. May You rescue us from the hand of every foe and ambush, from robbers and wild beasts on the trip, and from all manner of punishments that assemble to come to earth. May You send blessing in our handiwork, and grant us grace, kindness, and mercy in Your eyes and in the eyes of all who see us. May You hear the sound of our humble request because You are God Who hears prayer requests. Blessed are You, Lord, Who hears prayer.
Old Irish Blessing For Travelers
May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields and,
Until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
May God grant you always
A sunbeam to warm you,
A moonbeam to charm you,
A sheltering angel, so nothing can harm you.
May the Saints protect you
And bless you today
And may troubles ignore you
Each step of the way.
Tips & Reminders
- Remember to thank God for safe travel after you’ve returned home from your trip. Even if it’s as brief as “Thank you, Lord” be sure to genuinely acknowledge his protection. He’s so good to us!
- You might find it comforting to keep a bible verse or two with you when you travel. It can help keep you from feeling anxious and encourage you to put your trust in the Lord. Write them down on a small notepad or commit them to memory.
- You can bring an uplifting Christian book with you to read. One of my favorites is Ordering Your Private World by Rev. Gordon MacDonald.
