Today we’re chatting about bible reading for moms, and how busy moms can stay in the Word. We discuss bible reading plans and more!
Judging by the huge traffic and passionate comments on my post “To the Young Mom with the Busy Toddler at Church,” worshipping at church while mothering a toddler can sometimes feel like you’re shoveling your driveway in the middle of a snowstorm… you work and shovel and scrape and sweat, but some days you don’t feel like you’re making any progress. You wonder why you even try!
Similarly, finding time for prayer and bible reading can be challenging during the toddler years, too. (I did a facebook video about this a few months ago, here.)
My children are past the toddler stage now. As I write this, I have an eighth grader and a third grader. Finding time for bible reading can still be a challenge, but take heart! It does get easier as they get older.
Below are two practices that helped me soak in scripture during those hard seasons.

Bible Reading For Moms
Reading the 90 Day Bible
When they were younger, one way I stayed “in the Word” was by waking up 45 minutes earlier than usual and following the 90 Day Bible Reading Plan. Yes, as a tired mom of young kids it WAS challenging to get up early, but knowing that I could read through my entire bible in just 90 days was especially motivating for me. Reading those twelve pages a day seemed like an attainable goal, and in just three short months I would feel like I really accomplished something great.
In reality, it took me slightly over the 90 days to read through my bible, but I wouldn’t have done it any other way. I loved getting the “big picture” of reading the bible in such large chunks at a time, and I love knowing I set — and met — a big goal in my walk with God.
Writing Out Bible Scriptures
A second way I’ve stayed in the Word as a stay-at-home mom with young children was by doing something called scripture writing. You can simply write out bible passages in a basic spiral notebook, but I chose to purchase a Cultivate What Matters “Write the Word” Journal. There are a few different topics you can choose from, and this small, beautiful journal has related passages printed on the pages, which you write out.
One thing I love about scripture writing is that you can do it in small chunks of time throughout your day, such as while coloring with your child. Just pull out your Write the Word journal and write while he/she happily colors.
How do you stay in the Word while you have young children at home? Have you tried the 90 Day Bible or scripture writing before?

New to my web site? I like to write about ways to get out of debt, save money, and live an abundant life for the glory of God! Here are a few more ways you can save money:
- Cook at home instead of eating out. We used to waste so much money going out to eat! Try a program like emeals (the link takes to you a free 14-day trial) to help you create simple, inexpensive meals at home. You’ll save MORE money on your groceries each month than the small amount you pay for their service.
- Switch your cell phone service to a low-cost, lesser known carrier such as Republic Wireless. One of their unlimited monthly cell plans is only $15 per month!
- Find ways to earn side money from home, such as working as a virtual assistant to bloggers or by starting your own blog. That’s what I did, and now I get to work from home while I help others! It’s a win-win!
Tools We Recommend:
Mvelopes: This is the online budgeting program we personally use and LOVE. It works great with Dave’s baby steps. In fact, we purchased a lifetime membership several years ago when they offered it to us. It’s like a virtual cash envelope system, and it syncs with your bank accounts. Here’s my full Mvelopes review, or you can click here for a free 30 day trial of Mvelopes.
Personal Capital: Personal Capital is much more detailed than Mvelopes, and is more centered on helping you with your investing rather than your budgeting. You can track your net worth, cash flow, investments, retirement planning, and more. Personal Capital pretty much picks up where Mvelopes has left off. They even offer a free version of their services. Check them out here.
SoFi Loans: I’ve not personally used them since we’re debt free, but I’ve heard so many good things about them! If getting a loan is unavoidable for you, or you need to refinance student loans, be sure to check them out. You can apply on SoFi’s website (<–this link will also get you $100 cash bonus when your loan is funded) by setting up a simple account and then entering information about your education, employment, and income. Read our SoFi loans review here.
