Are You Possessed By Your Possessions?

“I haven’t met many people possessed by demons, but I’ve met many possessed by their possessions and possessed by fear.”

The preacher’s words on Sunday hit me like a ton of bricks.

It’s true.

In all our years of ministry, we’ve witnessed an awful lot of people obsessed with materialism and gripped by fear.

Charles Spurgeon said something similar here,

“How many are they who have made a god of their wealth.”

Money makes a lousy master.

And what about the bible? What does it have to say?

Here are a few of the things the bible warns us to stay away from:

Also note 1 Timothy 2:9, where we’re warned about adorning ourselves in “costly attire.”

Does that mean we can never own anything nice? No, it doesn’t.

Instead, it’s a warning about getting caught up in expensive clothing, fancy things, and the mentality of materialism.

It’s a reminder to live modestly and to question how much is enough.

Life is about so much more than stuff.

Do you possess your possessions, or do your possessions possess you?

It’s a good idea to pause and remember you can spend your life pursuing things that have more value than mere material possessions.

Pursue contentment.

Pursue thankfulness.

Pursue generosity.

Pursue godliness.

In the end, you’ll be wiser — and eternally richer — for it.

“But godliness with contentment is great gain.” 1 Timothy 6:6
