Crock Pot Red Beans and Rice Recipe – A traditional Cajun red beans and rice recipe the whole family will love, made super easy and budget friendly in your slow cooker or crock pot!
This is comfort food.
We’ve made this beans and rice recipe a handful of times now, and I recently served it to guests at our home. I also pulled out my 9×13 baking dish and whipped together a large batch of cornbread casserole, which is absolutely delicious crumbled on top. Then we serve my copycat recipe for J Alexanders Carrot Cake for dessert. It must’ve been a good meal, because they asked for the recipes as they were leaving. Isn’t that the ultimate compliment?!
It honestly only takes a few minutes to toss everything into the crock pot, and then you can walk away for the day.

If you need help putting a meal plan together, I highly recommend eMeals. I know Dave Ramsey often recommends them, too. You can choose what kind of meal plan you want, such as budget-friendly, keto, paleo, etc. There’s a small fee each month but you’ll make up for it in grocery savings from avoiding impulse purchases at the store. It rocks.
Plus, they can even send your meal plan and shopping list to your local WalMart so all you have to do is pick it up at the curb! They offer this service to other stores, too, but you’ll have to see what options are available in your city. Now, without further ado…
Crock Pot Red Beans and Rice Recipe
- 2 onions, finely chopped
- 2 celery ribs, finely chopped
- 6 garlic cloves, minced
- 2 TBSP vegetable oil (can be omitted if you’re comfortable with water sautéing)
- 1/2 tsp dried thyme
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- 4 cups chicken broth
- 4 cups water
- 1 pound dried kidney beans, rinsed and sorted
- 1 pound smoked turkey sausage, skinless, chopped 1/2″ thick (you could also use andouille sausage, but it will be a bit more spicy)
Microwave the onions, celery, garlic, oil (if using), thyme, and paprikas in a bowl for about four minutes, stirring a couple times, until softened.
Transfer to crock pot or slow cooker. Here’s the updated version of the crock pot I’m using. Stir in broth, water, beans, and sausage. Cover and cook until beans are tender and not firm at all, about 9-10 hours on high.
Then, add:
- 2 green bell peppers, chopped
- 1/2 cup instant white rice (also called minute rice)
Stir, cover, and cook for another 20 minutes.
Season to taste with Old Bay seasoning, and/or Tony Chachere’s Original Creole Seasoning. Both of these spices are so unique and really makes the recipe POP! I like to use a little of each.
*Season it slowly so you don’t make it too spicy, or if you’re trying to feed several people then wait and let them use the seasonings in their individual bowls. That way, if someone doesn’t like a bit of spice, they can just season with salt and pepper instead.
Enjoy! It’s delicious!

Have you tried it with a can on kidney beans? How much would I reduce the water if I used canned?
