Have you been feeling what I’m feeling lately? God has been tugging at my heart more than ever, drawing me deeper into His Word.
I want to turn off the news, stop scrolling my phone, and focus on my relationship with Him. I want a rich understanding of His Word, one that gives power against the enemy and helps me overcome the temptations of this world.
Hiding God’s Word in Your Heart
In Psalm 119:11 the psalmist says,
Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
The psalmist is showing us that we can hide God’s word in our hearts, so that when temptation come our way, we’ll know how to turn from temptation rather than sin against God.
God’s word is powerful! When we read, study, and memorize His word, it takes root in our hearts. The Holy Spirit brings it to our remembrance when we need it, such as when we’re tempted to sin or walking through a hard trial.
We see Jesus himself using Scripture to combat Satan in the Gospels. Matthew 4 gives us a glimpse into what happened when the Tempter tried to entice Jesus. Jesus replied with “It is written…” several times:
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4 But he answered, “It is written,
“‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple 6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,
“‘He will command his angels concerning you,’
“‘On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”
7 Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
Oh, what power there is in knowing and loving the Word of God! It sustains, strengthens, and encourages us.
He wants us to “be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2) but he also wants us to honor him with our heart: “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me” (Matthew 15:8).
Mark 12:30 puts it all together this way:
And thou shalt love the Lord thy God, with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind, and with thy whole strength.

- Read the verse several times.
- Write out the verse several times.
- Memorize a short first portion of the verse. For example, if I was memorizing Proverbs 3:5, which says: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding” I would first work on “Trust in the LORD with all your heart.” Once I had that memorized, I would move on to step #4.
- Memorize the next portion of the verse, while also including the first portion.
- Repeat the verse frequently over the next few days. This is crucial for helping the verse take root in your mind.
