When faced with potentially life-changing situations, sometimes you feel immobilized when it comes to making a decision. The weight of possibly making a wrong choice can prevent us from making any choice at all! As children of God, we can be confident that he will give us wisdom and clarity throughout the decision making process.
Asking God for help in making decisions may sometimes feel challenging, but remember He loves us and wants what’s best for us. Why try to make big decisions on our own when we can receive guidance from Him? His ways are better than ours.
Whether you need prayer for making a job decision, surgery decision, a big move, or something else that you are facing in your life right now, three important prayers that will help you gain clarity, peace, and perspective are the wisdom prayer, God’s character prayer, and the humility prayer.

3 Important Prayers For Decision Making
Wisdom Prayer
Heavenly Father, your word tells us in James 1:5 that if anyone asks for wisdom, you will give it. Today I’m asking for wisdom to make good choices and decisions. Guide my thinking and sharpen my mind.
God, help me to make the right decision. Help me to choose wisely between the options that are set before me. Protect me from clouded judgment and bless me with a sound mind. Protect me from being double minded or unstable during my decision making process.
Lord, please help me to decide. Let all that I do to bring honor to you. In Jesus name, amen.
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. James 1:5
God’s Character Prayer
Dear Lord, as I go about making this decision, help me to remember the character of God. You are my father and you desire good things for me. You want to help me.
Show me how to trust in the character of God, who:
- is faithful to me (1 Corinthians 10:13),
- is patient with me (2 Peter 3:9),
- created all things (Genesis 1:1),
- is more powerful than anyone (Isaiah 40:23),
- gives good things (James 1:17),
- keeps his promises (Numbers 23:19),
- is perfect in all his ways (Psalm 18:30),
- is compassionate, gracious, and righteous (Psalm 116:5).
Just like a father loves his children, you love me. You want to help me make the right decisions. Show me how to be confident as I walk through this decision making process and know that you are with me. In Jesus name, amen.
Humility Prayer
Father, as I go about making this decision, help me to be humble and seek your face continually. Protect me from my own selfish motives. Give me a spirit of humility and graciousness.
Although this is a difficult decision for me, help me to follow Jesus’s example on the cross when he said, “Not my will, but thy will be done.” I don’t want things to be about me – I want them to be about you and your plans and purposes for my life. I want your will to be done.
In 1 Peter 5:6 it says, “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.” That is what I’m seeking to do today and throughout this whole process: to humble myself and be completely open to hearing from you. I want to do what pleases you. Make your will known. Help me to see it clearly and obey.
Bless me with a spirit of humility, I pray. In Jesus name, amen.
