Dear friends, I know your hearts are heavy for our Afghan brothers and sisters. Mine is, too. This is an urgent situation! We must be mindful to make time to pray, worship the Lord, and stay in his Word. If we don’t, we will surely become overwhelmed and depressed. What is happening in the world is too great a burden for us to bear on our own. We were not created to carry the weight of the world on our shoulders. Instead, we must fervently pray and trust that our Heavenly Father is carrying this heavy burden for all of his children across the globe. He is the Deliverer (2 Sam 22:2; Ps 18:2; Ps 40:17).
This prayer will help you get started, but be sure to pause and use your own words as you pray. Think of this as a prayer prompt or simply as help to begin. There is certainly much more we can continue to pray for! Let the Holy Spirit lead you.
A Prayer for Afghanistan
God, put a hedge of protection around our brothers and sisters in Afghanistan. Hide them from the enemy and help them to feel your presence in a powerful and mighty way. Speak peace into their hearts and minds.
Strengthen them, God, physically and spiritually, so they can withstand these hardships. We ask that you grant them courage, discernment, and wisdom so that they will not be deceived or harmed.
Provide for their needs, Lord. Help them find shelter from the elements and from their enemies. Show them how to find the food and water they need to survive. Place the right people and resources in their path. Let them encourage one another and trust in you.
Protect their women and children, their young boys and girls. Keep them safe from harm. Help families stay together and not be ravaged apart. Hold them safely in your hands. Place a hedge of protection around them that blinds their enemies and turns evildoers far away.
Thwart the plans of the enemy so that they will not be fruitful. Hide them from the evildoers, whether in be in mountains, caves, or hidden in plain sight. May they encounter mighty moves of your spirit. Through this, may others also turn to you and bring glory to your name.
Lord, you are the Rock of Ages, and we pray that you hide them in the Rock. You are the Prince of Peace, and so we pray that you speak peace into their hearts and bring peace to their land. As the Lion of Judah, we pray that you bring divine deliverance. You are the Wonderful Counselor, so we ask that you grant them direction and bring comfort to them. As Light of the World, may your light shine brightly and pierce the darkness that is in their land, drawing others to you and giving them salvation.
These are your beautiful children, Lord… our brothers and sisters. Strengthen them. Draw them nearer to you. Hide them and protect them from evil. Until you choose to fully deliver them, give them an endurance and strength that can only come from you. Nothing is impossible for you!!! In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
Scriptures To Pray Over the Afghanistan People
Zephaniah 3:17
The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.
Lord God, be in their midst. You are the Mighty One who will save! Rejoice over them with gladness. Quiet their fear with your love. Rejoice over them in triumph as you lead them to victory.
Joshua 1:9
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”
Help your people be strong and courageous, not frightened or discouraged; help them know you are with them wherever they go.
John 17:15
I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one.
Lord, I pray that you spare their lives and protect them from the evil one.
Psalm 32:7
You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with shouts of deliverance. Selah.
You are their hiding place, Lord. Protect them from trouble and surround them with shouts of deliverance.
Psalm 46:1
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
God, you are their refuge and strength, a very present help in this time of trouble.
Romans 8:26
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
Help us in our weakness. We feel burdened to help, but we struggle with knowing how. While we may not know how best to pray for them, help us to pray and intercede for them through the groanings of your Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit, work through us in ways we can’t understand or even express in order to accomplish your will and purpose. When we can’t find the words to pray, speak through us.
In your Mighty Name we pray. Amen.
