Our family has practiced fasting for several years, which prompted me to begin building The Ultimate Daniel Fast Recipes List last year. There you will find our favorite Daniel Fast recipes, and I’ll continue to add more as we discover new favorites. Today, though, we’re focusing on easy Daniel Fast recipes… for those times you need to put together a simple dinner, quick.
Remember, these recipes are intended to be simple, NOT rich or heavy, because it is the opposite of “the king’s food” that Daniel abstained from during his captivity. During this time he ate mostly fresh foods, using beans, vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts, seeds, etc. It is my hope that these easy Daniel Fast recipes will help you stay the course on your hardest days. Some of them may need small modifications to fit your fast exactly, depending on how strict your interpretation of Daniel’s fast is.
Generally speaking, this fast is based on the account in Daniel 10, “In those days I, Daniel, was mourning three full weeks. I ate no pleasant food, no meat or wine came into my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.”
You can do this! You might also like to keep a set of my printable Daniel Fast scripture cards on hand for an extra boost of encouragement during this time, too!
Easy Daniel Fast Recipes
Lemon Asparagus Pasta (sub whole wheat pasta + flour)
Thai Fried Rice (sub brown rice)
Eggplant Meatballs (omit yeast)
Vegan Jambalaya (omit tabasco and soy sauce)
And last, but certainly not least, you can always do breakfast for dinner. This cherry muesli recipe is my favorite!
We personally do the Daniel Fast privately and, at times, corporately together with our church. There are several instances in the Bible where fasts were done either corporately or privately, as you can see in Matthew 6:16-18, Matthew 9:14-15, Esther 4:15-16, Isaiah 58:5-7. Those are just a few… and the book of Acts also outlines great moves of God that came about by a combination of prayer and fasting.
Rather than be tempted break your fast when you’re pressed for time, it’s helpful to keep ingredients on hand for a few easy Daniel Fast recipes. Prepare in advance. Make a meal plan for the week, if you can. Makes notes of any day(s) that seem to be overscheduled and busy, and plan accordingly. Don’t wait until the last minute! Here’s a sample of one of our personal Daniel Fast meal plans. Oh, and here’s a helpful list of Daniel Fast snacks to keep around, too!
