One question we receive about The Daniel Fast is “Are snacks allowed?” Thankfully, they are. Enjoy our helpful list of ideas for Daniel Fast snacks!
“Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.” Daniel 1:12
One of the many questions we receive about The Daniel Fast is, “Are snacks allowed?” And then, of course, “What can I have and how much?!”
We realize that fasting is to be a sacrifice. When we embark on a fast where we abstain from food completely, naturally, we are not snacking then. With the Daniel Fast, it is a bit different. We are to be denying ourselves things that we love and are used to partaking of on a regular basis; such as, meats and dairy. But, we are not going completely without food. On the Daniel Fast, we can stay on it for a longer period of time, which is spiritually and physically beneficial.
Three small meals a day and two light snacks would be sufficient for most. If we eat all day long, even Daniel Fast approved foods; we would miss the point of the fast. We must remember that the purpose is to draw closer to God, to go without things that we treasure and then spend more time with our Lord.
Many times we do need something easy and light; for work, traveling, school or just too busy at home and you do not want to fix a full meal. For those times that you need a light snack or even a lighter meal, we have gathered some suggestions for you; and all are allowed on the Daniel Fast! Below is a long list of ideas for yummy Daniel Fast snacks.
Daniel Fast Snacks
Berries
Celery and Peanut Butter
Dried Fruit
Frozen Fruit
Granola
Nuts
Popcorn (no butter!)
Pumpkin Seeds
Raw Veggies
Roasted Carrots
Smoothies
Trail Mix
Unsweetened Applesauce
Apple Slices dipped in raw almond butter or just plain
Brown Rice Cakes. On their own they are not too exciting, but there are several very good choices that will liven up those little, round, Styrofoam hockey pucks! Try them with all natural peanut butter or an all-fruit spread (no sugar!). Some even like to mash an avocado and treat it the rice cake as a piece of toast. Not bad; not bad at all.
Chips and Salsa. Say what?! On the Daniel Fast? Take whole wheat tortillas, and with a pizza cutter, cut each tortilla into four triangles. Line them up on a baking sheet in a single layer, brush them lightly with oil and sprinkle with sea salt or garlic salt. Bake 8-10 minutes. You can experiment with other seasonings and create your own flavors.
For an easy Salsa gather these ingredients:
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 green peppers, diced
- 1 red pepper, diced
- 5-6 Roma tomatoes, diced
- 1 jalapeno, diced and seeded
- 1 garlic clove, minced
- Cilantro, as much as desired
Mix all together and add sea salt and a squeeze of lime to your taste. So good and there is no worry of added sugar that you would get in store-bought salsa.
Guacamole. It can be made really quickly with 4-5 medium avocados, 2 T lime and ½ teaspoon of salt. So many uses for this healthy food!
Fruit and Oat Bars:
- 2 c. rolled oats
- 3 fairly ripe bananas
- 1 cup chopped dates
- 1/2 cup nuts of your choice
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 1/2 tsp salt
Mash the bananas, add in the rest of the ingredients, mix well and let it stand about 15 minutes. Shape them into granola bar rectangles and lay on a cookie sheet. Bake about 10-15 minutes in a 350 degree oven, being careful not to overbake. At about the ten minute mark, turn them over and bake another ten minutes.
Banana “Sandwich”:
- 2 fairly ripe bananas
- About ¼ cup almond butter or all-natural peanut butter
Cut your peeled bananas into little slices and spread about a teaspoon of the peanut or almond butter on half and then put another banana slice on top! Yum!
Frozen “Sherbet”:
Just take a couple of frozen bananas, about one cup of frozen strawberries or frozen pineapple, let sit just about 10-15 minutes and then process in food processor until it is the consistency of sherbet. Delicious.
It is easy to become consumed with, “Can I have THIS?” and “Am I allowed THAT?” while on the Daniel Fast. But you are sacrificing and giving up things you love and going without some things that are a regular part of your diet. What you are NOT doing is continually looking for ways to make your new foods taste like your regular diet.
And finally, remember, fasting without prayer is a waste of your time and effort. Fast unto the Lord, submit to Him and He will hear and answer!
Go in grace today!
