Natural Skin Care Tips For Winter

Jaime's note: Today, Kristy from Little Natural Cottage is sharing her natural skin tips for winter.  If you haven't heard, she has written a very helpful ebook, "The Cottage Mama's DIY Guide," which features nourishing, healthy tips, tricks, and recipes.  She covers natural skin care, toxin-free cleaners, and more!  You can read more about her book here.  AND --- drumroll, please --- not only is it on sale today for just $3, but she's also given LABB readers an extra-special discount code for an additional 25% off!   The code is WINTERBROOK and is good until Thursday.  Enjoy!

Even in the "warm" state of Texas, delicate skin endures mistreatment during winter time. If you've ever suffered with eczema, chronic dryness, dandruff, or other winter-related skin maladies, then I'm sure you can relate!

Here are a few of my favorite tips for nourishing our family's skin during the cold weather season:

Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Dry bodies mean dry skin. We simply cannot expect the largest organ of our bodies (our skin!) to compete with an insufficient supply of water. Health experts recommend drinking at least two quarts of filtered water per day; I personally believe this is a minimal amount. My goal is to encourage my children to drink two quarts of water a day; I strive to drink about twice that much.

If you're not accustomed to drinking a lot of water throughout the day, fill a pitcher with water in the morning and see how much of it you can drink by supper time. Make it your goal to empty that container before the evening meal! Even children can develop healthy habits in this area. It's vitally important for our overall health, and the health of our skin.

Eliminate skin allergens in the home.

Several of our children suffered with eczema as infants. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that "going green" with our household and body products basically eliminated this issue for our family. Detergents, soaps, lotions, and just about any product that comes into contact with our skin has the ability to create irritation; this is especially true for those with sensitive skin. Switching to "green" products, or using quality homemade products, can help skin endure winter dryness free of rashes and itching.

There are many wonderful "green" brands to choose from; our family's favorite is Melaleuca. We also love using the moisturizing handmade soaps from Simply Cleansing and Vintage Handmade Soaps.

Whole foods can help!

Not only will a diet of whole foods nourish your body (and thus your skin) with proper nutrients, but whole foods are also a great option for treating your skin topically.

  • Extra virgin coconut oil is a superb choice for moisturizing your face and hair (a little goes a long way!).
  • Warm olive oil treatments can help keep your hands, hair, and even your scalp from becoming too dry (use sparingly if you have oily skin).
  • A simple face mask made from oats, bananas, and yogurt will exfoliate and cleanse your face. (You can find this recipe in The Cottage Mama's DIY Guide.)

Resist the urge to spend a fortune on skin products... take a peek inside your kitchen pantry instead!

Humidify your home.

Our family spent seven winters in west Texas during the years my husband served as pastor to an area church. West Texas has cold, severely DRY winters.

During the cold weather months, I found it extremely helpful to keep a humidifier going nearly around the clock in our home. I used a steam vaporizer in our bedrooms at night, and a cool mist humidifier during the day, to keep a level of moisture in the air.

We are no longer in dry, west Texas, but I learned a few tricks that still work when we need them!

How do you nourish your skin during winter time?

The “Little” Things

coltharppic

By Contributing Writer, Rachel Coltharp

“I want to do something big.” She says it with an apologetic look at me. “Not just take care of a house and little kids.”

Is that a little thing?   I suppose if you look at it through the eyes of materialism, or from the perspective of those who believe that making a name for yourself is of the utmost importance, it may be a little thing.  But what is it through the eyes of Eternity?

It is no small thing, this raising of children; this molding of their hearts into the image of the Almighty, this careful instruction that prepares them to meet Him, to know Him, to love Him.

It is no small thing that I do every day, for the smallest ones in my household; when I serve the least of these, I am serving Him.

It is no small thing, the giving of my time, the investing of my limited energy into these little ones who never seem to run out of energy. I am investing in eternity, where time will be no more.

Big things. Little things. Who can determine which is which?  I choose to let God weigh it out.  It's my investment in the hearts, minds, and souls of the children He lent me vs. the material gain and earthly position I might find pursuing lesser things.

It is no small thing, this giving of myself, for little ones, eternal souls. They are mine for a moment. A small, short moment. One day, too soon, they will lay down this skin they are in, and return their lent breath to God who gave it. Then, only then, will the little things be seen for what they really were. When the trophies of this earth have crumbled to dust, when the gains of our world have melted away, when the names of the famous have been forgotten, then we will know.

And then the little things will not seem little at all.

My Goals for 2012

2012 numbers

About ten years ago, a mentor and successful businessman counseled us with these wise words: "People don't plan to fail, they fail to plan."  I believe that's true.

I get so much more done when I've set specific, reasonable, measurable goals for myself.

Last year, I set some basic goals for a few things (like reading), but nothing like what I've done this year.  I've broken everything down and spelled everything out --- I haven't done it this thoroughly in years.  And it feels really, really good.

Let's dig in...

Here are my goals for 2012:

Personal

  • Continue daily Bible reading and prayer time.
  • Complete the 21 day Daniel Fast.
  • Read at least 24 books, or two books per month. (My January books are here)
  • Complete the Couch to 5K program.

Marriage

  • Go on the Love Like You Mean It marriage cruise.
  • Go on one overnight getaway.
  • Have monthly date nights.

Children/Family

  • Take each child out alone once per month.
  • Work toward potty-training Preston.
  • Go on at least one family vacation.
  • Go on a family camping trip in the summer.
  • Complete 12 read-aloud books.
  • Continue having one family night together at home per week.
  • Plan one family activity per week (hiking, walks, parks, etc).
  • Visit with extended family at least once each month.

Homemaking

  • Re-organize my homekeeping binder and recipe binder.
  • Transform 8x8 closet downstairs into organized pantry for bulk purchases.
  • Continue regular homemaking routine, including one load of laundry each day.
  • Re-decorate master bedroom.
  • Finish unpacking items still in boxes from move.
  • Quarterly de-clutter the house.

Homeschool

  • Complete second grade, begin third grade with Gentry.
  • Begin simple pre-school lessons with Preston.
  • Read one more book on Charlotte Mason’s philosophy and integrate ideas.
  • Go on one field trip per month.
  • Continue with swimming lessons for Gentry.
  • Continue with art classes for Gentry.

Ministry

  • Assist my husband in preparing for monthly leadership meetings.
  • Assist my husband in creating monthly ministry schedules.
  • Assist my husband with paperwork for new church building construction.
  • Plan two ladies events each quarter.
  • Update church calendar each month.
  • Read one ministry-related book per month.
  • Other church planning, hospitality, banquets, etc as needed.

Financial

  • Continue to tithe at least 10% of income.
  • Give generously as needs arise and are prayerfully considered.
  • Continue to save 100% of our rental’s net income (after taxes, tithes, etc) towards updating the rental property.

Commit To Daily Bible Reading: 5 Tips To Begin The New Year

***Precious mamas, this is part two of what I shared here yesterday. I shared these thoughts last year and have updated them a bit; I pray they are a blessing to you. They've been on my heart as we plan and prepare for this new year.***

"The Bible was written not to be studied, but to change our lives."

- Dr. Howard Hendricks

Yesterday, I shared my heart about the importance of reading the Bible, and I asked if you'd join me in making an increased commitment to Bible reading in the new year.

Today, I'd like to share something with you that made reading the Bible from cover to cover much easier for my husband and I, and that is the 90 Day Bible:

The Bible in 90 Days: Cover to Cover in 12 Pages a Day (New International Version)

One year it took me four months to complete this Bible, and another year it took me six months. Some actually do complete it in the advertised 90 days, but sometimes being a mama means that days aren't perfectly planned out.

By reading only twelve pages a day, it is possible complete this entire Bible in 90 days. Most days, you can read the twelve pages in about 45 minutes time. I usually do it in the morning, but you can break it up and do six pages in the morning and six pages at night, or whatever works for you.

If you don't want to purchase the Bible, you can find a similar reading plan available here and here, and you can simply print it from your computer (for free) and use it with your own Bible.  There are also Kindle versions available here.

The objective is to read the Bible.

Some will complain that reading it through this quickly doesn't give you a chance to really study it, absorb it, meditate on it. I know. I've heard the arguments, and I beg to differ. I enjoy the "big picture" aspect of reading it through this way, and then pausing to study in more detail when I come across an intriguing passage.

Reading the Bible through, whether you're reading it in 90 days, one year, or five years, will change you. Period. You will learn and you will grow; you will become a student of the Word and not merely a spectator. You will be a participant in the Word and no longer a passive observer. You will discover firsthand the truths that He has revealed in His Word. Your spiritual life will grow and mature. You will begin to crave that special time in the Word each morning!

Five Tips To Help You Begin:

1. Choose a reading plan, and then set a time aside each day to read. Do not say that you will read here and there as you can find the time.... the time will never come.

2. Commit to waking 45 minutes earlier each morning, and set your alarm.

3. Get the coffee or tea ready the night before so it's easier to grab a cup and stumble over to the armchair.

4. Do not do a "quick" check of your email before you complete your day's reading, and don't open Facebook, either. Stay focused! No computer time until you are done!

5. If you are unable to finish your reading goal that morning (perhaps the children awoke earlier than normal), then commit to finishing the reading during naptime or just before bed. Don't put it off until the next day; it will quickly become overwhelming.

In twenty years, will you still be wishing you had done it? Or will you make this year the year?

I'm praying for you - I know you can do it!

Is Your Bible Dusty?

***Precious mamas, we've been using this week to plan and set goals for the new year. This post, which I wrote and shared here last year, has been on my mind as we plan our Bible reading for 2012. Maybe you need to read it again, too?  I'll share part two tomorrow.***

"Dusty bibles lead to dirty lives."

I've heard this - read this - a dozen times or more. To me, it's one of those thoughtful, impacting little nuggets that makes reading a whole book just to stumble upon it, well... worth it.

Sometimes the book I'm reading may not be spectacular, but there's one thought in it that changes the way I think, and this is one of those thoughts. It convicts me.

Is your Bible dusty? Is is reflected in the way you live? In your relationship with Him? With others?

Ouch.

As my dear husband and I begin planning next year's Bible reading, I stumble upon this, from Dr. Hendrick's book Living by the Book: The Art and Science of Reading the Bible:

"You see, a lot of people nowadays are making all kinds of claims about what the Bible supposedly teaches - claims that are simply not true. A closer inspection of Scripture reveals that the Bible doesn't, in fact, teach what they say it does. Likewise, there are a lot of things that the Bible does teach that many people don't even know about, because the truths are deemphasized or ignored altogether."

Dear friend, beautiful mama, do you know what the Bible teaches? Have you read it for yourself? Studied it? Poured over it?

Have you felt His love, His story in it?

Have your tears ever washed over its pages?

It is for you.

Many of us want a word from God, but not the Word of God. We may own a Bible, but the Bible does not own us, it's not in us, not in our hearts and minds.

If you were without face-to-face communications with your husband for many years, and he carefully wrote you a book out of His tremendous love for you, and you longed to be reunited with him again someday, wouldn't you read that book over and over again, savoring every sentence?

Surely you would. How could you not?

"Like newborn babes, long for the pure milk of the Word, that by it you may grow in respect to salvation." - 1 Peter 2:2

Later this week, I'll share some tips and a tool that we use in reading our Bible through, cover to cover. We've done it in years past, and plan to do it again this upcoming year.

Would you prayerfully consider reading the Bible through in 2012? Or perhaps at least one testament?

It will change you.
