Considering This Year’s Christmas Cards

Have you ever ordered prints or cards from Shutterfly? I’ve ordered both prints and cards, and have always been impressed with their quality. I especially love my 5x7 stationery cards; they are great to keep on hand for sending out a quick note.

This year I’m planning to try out their Christmas cards, and they have a special promotion running where bloggers can get 50 free cards. If you’re a blogger, check out the promo here.

If you are not a blogger, or need more than 50 cards, there are still great ways to save on Shutterfly cards. For instance, today only you can get 20% off all cards, and get free shipping if you spend $30 or more.  You can even sample a card for free by using the promo code CARD4U, or get 50 free photo prints for free.  Just keep an eye on the Shutterfly site and you’ll be certain to find more special offers before Christmas.

Here are some great items you may want to keep an eye on:

Christmas cards
Christmas return address labels
Christmas gift tags

Check back often, as they are sure to have some great sales and promos coming soon! I’ll do my best to share them with you here. For starters, you can get 50 free prints when you sign up for a free account with Shutterfly, and get free shipping with the code SHIP30 when you spend $30 or more.  Check out all their special offers here.

I just love sharing a special family photo with our friends and relatives each Christmas season, and I especially like this simple and reasonably priced photo card design.  Very classic, don't you think?

What are your plans for Christmas cards? Will you be sending any this year?

What We Should Really Be Afraid Of

My dear "real-life" friend, Rachel (a pastor's wife and mama extraordinaire) just shared some very wise thoughts on her blog in a post titled "Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid."  Here's a brief highlight of this timely post:

Yes, I want them to be afraid. Not of gruesome looking Halloween figures that come out once a year, but of the REAL monsters, chains and messengers of hell that walk the streets everyday. For in healthy fear, there is power. Power over the trap laid out to snare their feet. Power to say “No”. Power to make wise choices.

As Halloween approaches, this may give you some ideas for sparking a discussion about fear with your children.  Won't you hop over to read more and leave a hello?  Click here.

           Sweetly ~

Sir Ken Robinson Discusses Education

If you have the time, this 11 minute video is fascinating.  Sir Ken Robinson shares some interesting thoughts regarding education, especially government education, and even discusses the increased amount of children diagnosed with ADHD.

Please keep in mind that I do not agree with everything stated in this video, but I do find much of it to be accurate and thought-provoking.  I would love to have seen some level of emphasis on the importance of the family's role in education, whether the child be in public, private, or home school.

I especially enjoyed the thought that "we should be waking them [the children] up to what they have inside of themselves."

About seven minutes into the video he briefly touches on the practice of  what I call "conveyor belt education" and it's implications.

Near the end of the clip, he discusses the importance of divergent thinking, and shares a study that was done with kindergartners.   Research found that 98% of the kindergartners excelled at divergent thinking, but their ability to think became more linear as they continued through school.

I'd love to hear your thoughts.  Keep in mind, I shared this video because I am passionate about education.  Real education.  Not rote memorization, not our government systems, not our standardized testing.  EducationI especially love education when it places emphasis on the role of the family and the foundation of the Word.

I value education as a tool, and we must understand that is what it is; it is not a piece of paper to be idolized.  It is a tool to enhance our life, and, perhaps to some extent, a means to an end.

I say this as a homeschooling mama with a master's degree, one who loves to learn and share, but believes our current system leaves much to be desired.

How To Get Diapers For Much, Much Less

Do you have a child in diapers or know someone that does?

Up until the last few months, my goal was to spend no more than $5 (rather than the retail price of $12.99) for a jumbo pack of diapers at our local drugstores, like CVS or Walgreens. The Huggies size 5 jumbo pack has 27 diapers, so that was a cost of almost .19 per diaper, not too bad. Actually, that was pretty good!

Lately, however, there have been some much better diaper deals running on Amazon.com, specifically through the Amazon Mom program, including 120 size 5 Huggies diapers for about .13 cents each (that's $16 for 120 diapers)! Just use your Amazon Mom membership (it's free, and you'll get a 15% discount), choose the Subscribe & Save option to receive an additional 15% discount (you can cancel anytime), and input the 20% off discount code from the Amazon coupon found in some Parents magazines, if you have it.

I'm not planning to shop for diapers at the local drugstore anytime soon, and $5 for a jumbo pack seems expensive to me now. Really, if you think about it, even if there are no coupons available and you're just using your Amazon Mom discount along with Subscribe & Save, you can get all the diapers you need for less than .19 cents per diaper (or $5 a jumbo pack), sometimes much less, depending the size that you need. No more watching for CVS extra care bucks sales on diapers, no more collecting massive amounts of diaper coupons from newspaper inserts. And, they are delivered right to your door for free... no shipping charges!

I've been purchasing these Luvs Diapers for my little guy.  After discounts, they come to $25 for a box of 150 diapers, which is about .16 per diaper, without considering the coupons that have been in Parents magazine recently.  If you have those coupons, you can save even more.

Those are just the kinda diaper deals this homeschoolin', stay-at-home mama is grateful for :)

(Make these deals even sweeter by accumulating Swagbucks from your internet searches, and use the Swagbucks to purchase $5 Amazon gift cards. Apply those gift cards to your Amazon diaper purchases. Accumulate even more Swagbucks by referring your friends, or participating in daily surveys if you have the time.  Haven't heard of Swagbucks before?  Hop on over and check it out!)

Glorifying God in Our Daily Life

"We talk a lot about being filled with the Holy Spirit, so it's fascinating to see what areas of our lives we tend to apply that concept- and what areas we consistently avoid.

Allow me to get personal.  Is your money under control?  Most Christian financial counselors will tell you firsthand we're out to lunch in this area.  Did you know that 80% of all Americans owe more than their net worth?  And yet an incredible amount of money passes through our hands.  American Christians will have a lot to give account for when they get to the judgement seat of Christ, because to whom much has been given, much will be required.

What about your material possessions?  My wife Jeanne and I once dined with a rich man from a blue blood Boston family, and I asked him, "How in the world did you grow up in the midst of such wealth and not be consumed by materialism?"

His answer: "My parents taught us that everything in our home was either an idol or a tool."

So how do you view your possessions?

How does being a Christian relate to your thought life?  Both at seminary and as I travel I find young men and women who've filled their minds with garbage, and then they ask me, "How come I'm not holy?"

How about your diet?  If I scheduled a seminar at your church and then walked in drunk, you'd dismiss me immediately.  But if I walked in fifty pounds overweight, you'd feed me more, right?  Sure, after all, you really can't have a Christian gathering without food... But maybe this is too convicting.  On to something else.

How about exercise?  Dr. Kenneth Cooper told an audience of about three to four hundred students at our seminary that by a regular, systemic exercise program, they could each add five to fifteen years to their ministry.  Think of the implications!"

~ Dr. Howard Hendricks, from his book Teaching to Change Lives
 (one of my favorite books!)
